When planning your wedding, you’ll likely come across the option to add a second photographer, sometimes called a “second shooter.” If you’re wondering what that actually means and if it’s worth the investment, you’re not alone. As a Minneapolis wedding photographer, I talk with couples about this all the time. Let’s walk through what a second shooter does, how it changes your coverage, and when it makes the most sense for your day.
A second shooter is simply another professional photographer who joins your main photographer for the day. Think of it as having a second set of eyes. While your main photographer is focused on you and the big moments, the second shooter is catching different angles, guest reactions, and candid details that would otherwise be missed.
For example, at a Minnesota wedding with separate getting ready locations, I might be with the bride and bridesmaids while my second shooter is with the groom and groomsmen. That way you get both sides of the story without anyone feeling left out.
Adding a second shooter means more coverage and variety in your gallery. Here are some common examples:
The result is a fuller, more complete gallery that feels like you’re reliving the whole day from multiple perspectives.
A question I often hear from couples planning weddings in Minneapolis or across Minnesota is, “Will the second shooter’s photos look different?”
The short answer: no. Every photo, whether I took it or my second shooter did, goes through me before you see it. I curate everything, make the selects, and edit in my consistent style. The final gallery feels seamless, polished, and true to the day.
Pricing can vary depending on your photographer. Some Minnesota wedding photographers include a second shooter in their larger packages, while others (like me) make it optional.
A second shooter typically runs between $300–$500 for the day, or $50–$100 per hour. It really depends on how much coverage you want. For example, if you only want a second shooter for the ceremony and early reception, you don’t have to book them for the full day.

Not every wedding requires one. For smaller, more intimate gatherings in Minneapolis, a single photographer can usually cover everything. But there are situations where having two photographers makes a big difference:
When my wife and I got married, we chose to add a second shooter. He spent the morning with me and my groomsmen while our main photographer was with her and the bridesmaids. Would we have missed those photos if he wasn’t there? Probably. But having them gave us a more complete gallery and let us see the day from both perspectives. It’s something we’re still grateful for.
Hiring a second shooter is one of the easiest ways to elevate your wedding coverage. More perspectives, more candid moments, more of the people you love captured in one of the most important days of your life.
As a Minnesota wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how much value a second shooter brings to couples planning weddings in Minneapolis and across the state. If you’re considering it, I’d love to talk through your day and help figure out if it makes sense for you.
