One of the keys to a smooth, enjoyable wedding day is a well-planned timeline. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how a thoughtfully structured schedule can make all the difference. With the right timing, you can capture every beautiful moment without feeling rushed. Whether you’re planning a full-day wedding, a micro-wedding, or an intimate elopement, here’s how to create a stress-free timeline that allows for all the magic of the day.
Your wedding day is a whirlwind of joy, celebration, and emotion. Without a clear plan, it’s easy to lose track of time or feel overwhelmed. A well-structured timeline helps you savor each moment, keeps things moving smoothly, and ensures that your photographer can capture every essential shot. Remember, every wedding is unique, and every timeline should be tailored to your specific vision. But one key piece of advice? Always plan to allow enough time for your photos—these are memories you’ll cherish forever.
Let’s dive into how to plan your day with examples for three types of weddings: full-day, micro-weddings, and elopements.

For a traditional wedding day with multiple events, here’s an example timeline that balances each aspect of the day.
12:00 PM – Getting Ready
I typically recommend allowing around one hour for getting-ready photos. This time captures not just hair and makeup but also special moments with family and friends. The amount of time can depend on how far away the couple is away from each other.
1:00 PM – First Look (Optional)
If you’re doing a first look, plan for at least 20-30 minutes to capture this intimate moment. It helps reduce nerves and allows for some beautiful, private portraits.
1:30 PM – Bridal Party & Family Photos
Doing these photos before the ceremony can save time later. Plan for about 1.5 hours to capture the wedding party, immediate family, and any other pre-ceremony portraits.
3:00 PM – Buffer Time
You’re going to be tired by this point already. I like to keep an hour to either rest and hang out with your loved ones or each other but also, things always happy and we may need that extra time.
4:00 PM – Ceremony
Most ceremonies last between 30-45 minutes, but it’s always good to have a little buffer time in case things run long.
4:30 PM – Cocktail Hour & Couple Portraits
This is a great time to sneak away for some post-ceremony portraits. Plan for at least 45 minutes to an hour for beautiful sunset shots and couple photos. And make sure to keep your guests happy during this time by offering refreshments or appetizers—no one wants hangry guests waiting around for dinner!
5:30 PM – Reception Begins
Now you can relax and enjoy your reception! Plan key moments like toasts, cake cutting, and the first dance, while allowing time for candid shots throughout the evening

For a shorter celebration with close family and friends, here’s a condensed yet comprehensive timeline.
Elopements are wonderfully intimate and flexible, allowing you to create a relaxed timeline that reflects your unique vision.
